First, the transmission. We got one estimate for an outrageous amount so we decided to take the car to another place and got the same estimate. They both listed the same work and about the same amount, so we figured no one was trying to screw us over. Or maybe they both were ;) Anyway, $2000 later, we have a rebuilt transmission. We take the car back in a couple of weeks for a follow up "check up" - I guess you could call it.
We had to take Cameron to the emergency room on June 18. Here's an excerpt from a post that I made on the baby message board I post on from that night:
"Whew. We just got back from the emergency room. Cameron started with a fever around 2:30 today. It was 101.6. He was only acting moderately cranky so I just chalked it up to teething fever. He started acting more pathetic so I gave him some Motrin. We went to my parents' house around 5:30 to help them move some deck furniture. At first he was all happy, playing and terrorizing Mom and Dad's house. He ate dinner well. After dinner, he was acting very cuddly and fell asleep in my arms. He was much hotter than he was earlier. We took his temp and it was 103.6 and he was breathing quite rapidly. We called the doctor's answering service and were told they would page the on-call doctor. We gave him a lukewarm bath and he was shivering and crying. We still hadn't heard back 40 minutes later, so we called again. I'm not sure how much more time went by, but his temp was then up to 103.8 and he was very lathargic, so we just headed to the ER. Of course, while we were there, Cam started acting more "with it" and even smiled a couple of times. They think something viral is causing the fever. The ER doc saw a couple of white ulcers at the back of his throat and pointed out a "rash" on his back (it looks spotchy under his skin). He thinks it may be the start of hand, mouth & foot, which is going around the area. So they sent us home and told us to alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 4 hours. I'm glad nothing is really wrong with him. What really pisses me off is the on-call ped. NEVER CALLED US BACK! She never called my Mom's or my cell phone. It really really really irks me."
We took Cam to the pediatrician the following Monday as a follow-up to the ER visit. Here's the post from that day:
"We took Cam to the ped yesterday as a follow-up to the ER visit. He does not have Hand-Foot-Mouth!! Yay! I was getting worried, because there appeared to be a rash on the tops of both of his feet...turns out it is just rug burn from crawling. He's crawling more on his hands and knees these days, rather than his typical army crawl. The ped swabbed him for strep (although rare in kids this young, she's been seeing it lately) and it was negative. Just a virus that's giving Cam a very sore throat. He's been fever-free for a couple of days now. Today, he's been eating very well - I'd say he's 85% back to normal. He's been waking up at night, crying, the past few nights. Hope that'll end soon. I'm not used to this getting up 2 and 3 times a night crap!
Now, the failure to call back issue...when I called to make the appointment yesterday, I told the receptionist what happened. She said I'd receive a call back from the doctor right away. It was actually the doc that was on-call Friday night who called us, and she called back quickly, like 15 minutes after I made Cameron's appointment. She said she did not receive the first page and that the phone was busy (???) on the second page. She was very nice and apologetic about the situation. She told us that next time, if we don't hear back from the doc within 15 minutes, call the answering service back and ask them to contact the doc by phone, not to page her. Anyway, they seemed very sincere about everything, so I'm satisfied. It just better not happen again."
ANYWAY, we're all back to normal at this point and Cam's throat seemed to clear up within a few days.
Next topic! Cameron had his first 1st birthday party this past Sunday the 27th at Tony's dad's house in Jonesville. It was the Maddox side of the family. They grilled out and had lots of good side dishes. We had cake (I'll post the pictures on Cam's site soon - I swear!) and opened presents. It was a lovely day...the weather was beautiful. Cam acted like he had a good time. Hope he has just as much fun (or more!) at his party at our house this Saturday!!
Oh My God. So my family is so messed up. I realized yesterday that I forgot to send my Uncle Jack and Aunt Angie an invitation to Cameron's party (the Saturday party). I don't know if Mom did not tell me to invite them, or if I just forgot to write their names down or what. Anyway, I called them this morning. Jack answered and acted like he did not know who I was. I told him about Cam's party - well I was halfway through telling him about the party - and he said "Well the other ones got an invite 10 days ago." I said that I was sorry but I had forgotten to mail his. So I was telling him what time it was and he hung up on me! What a dick! So I guess I'm on his shit list now. I guess it was my turn, since he gets all yanked off at every family member now and then. I'm really mad, mostly because it made me cry. I guess we don't have to worry about splitting up Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. He is such an asshat, I swear. Everyone makes mistakes, you know? I mean, if I meant to avoid inviting them, why would I call? For God's sake, I send them a freaking Christmas card every year and go to the gatherings at their house that I'm invited to...why would they think I did not invite them on purpose? Give me a break, my dad is sick - my kid is all over the place these days (he likes to terrorize the house and everything else!) - I just had to pay 2,000 to get my transmission fixed - I'm trying to plan a party! I'm stressed out and it's hard to remember everything! Blah.
Cameron had a photo sitting tonight for his 1-year pictures. It did not go so great. First we did a couple of family shots. Very nice, except for the lovely fat rolls on my stomach that seem to have been highlighted (in the proofs, at least). The first couple of shots of Cam alone went well and were cute. Then he got all cranky and clingy and did not want to have anything to do with the rest of the shoot. We bought a ton of sheets, even though we weren't particularly thrilled with the results. Maybe we'll go back later this week and try again. We belong to the VIP club, so sittings are free. It's an idea.
Cameron's birthday and 12-month pediatrician's appointment are tomorrow! Can you believe my little baby is going to by one? In some ways, it seems that time has flown by. However, it seems like forever ago that Cam was just a little lump swaddled in a receiving blanket. Ah, the memories!
Oh my, I just saw Lenny Kravitz on a Target commercial...what is this world coming to?
OK, well that's just about enough for now. I'm sure you're already overloaded. More tomorrow. Or the next day. Buh-bye!
