OK, book talk.
First, I finished A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton. Hated it. I felt like it was all I could do just to get through the book. I mean, these Grafton alphabet books are wildly popular, right? I'm just not seeing it. Kinsey Millhone is the main character, a private investigator, and I find her highly unlikable. I am all for female empowerment, but this chick is a bitch! And the writing. What can I say? I can't stand this kind of crap:
"I watched him, hypnotically, my senses dulled by the heat that was raging way down, way deep. It was like a pile of rags beginning to smolder, something firemen had warned us about in grade school. Paint cans, jars of gasoline--fumes in compression. All it needed was a spark, sometimes not even that. I could feel my eyes close, mouth coming open against my will....I hadn't known how much I wanted him until then, until that point, but the sound I made was primitive and his response was fierce and immediate..."
Blah blah blah! I hate that cheeseball sex scene smut. I so would not recommend this book to anyone (and I assume the whole series sucks, too).
Now, for a wonderful, amazing read. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. My mother-in-law lent me this book. I loved it. It was such a gut-wrenching, emotional read, though. I cried like 10 different times while reading it. OK, if you're a guy, you probably won't go for it. I think it is a chick book. Tony read it and thought it has boring and hokey - he even laughed out loud at one part. Men. They are heartless! I don't want to tell you the story, for fear of giving anything away, but I would totally recommend it to all my friends.
Alright, now I am reading 1st to Die by James Patterson. I'm just getting into the novel and am not sure how I feel so far. Actually I read the first few pages months ago and it seemed so boring to me. Now that I am out of reading material, though, I decided I'd settle to be bored as long as I had something to read. So, I got past the first few boring pages. I can't say yet whether I'm digging the plot. It's ok so far. I've met three characters so far. The thing is....and this kinda bothers me....first we meet Character A. Character A talks in first person for a few chapters (and this book has the shortest chapters I've ever seen!) Then we meet Character B. Character A is not involved, so Character B's doings are told in third person. I'm ok with that. NOW. Character C comes along. So now Character C interacts with Character A, but it's all told in third person. All this switching between first and third person bothers me a bit. I'm trying to think outside the box here. Maybe I'll get over it!
Did I tell you my dad's spleen surgery is September 8th? Also, Cam's "probe and irrigation" surgery for his blocked tear ducts was scheduled for Sept. 16th, but then rescheduled for October 7th. Ok fine. I just hope they don't reschedule it again. All these dates are confusing me.
Here's a good one. I broke my little toe yesterday! Cam and I were in his room. He was playing nicely, turned away from me. I had to go to the bathroom, so I thought I'd quickly sneak away unnoticed. I whirled around and slammed my toe into his hamper. The worst pain ever. I just fell to the ground and cried. The dogs were quite concerned, and Cam came over and used me to pull himself up. Of course he thought it was playtime. Anyway, I wasn't sure if it was broken at first. It was still pointing in the right direction. I could walk on the foot. About 45 minutes later it turned purple. It is still painful and a real bitch to walk on in shoes. I hope it gets a lot better by Melanie's wedding on the 18th. I will DIE in my dress shoes all day if it's still all painful. My first broken bone - a baby toe! What a lamo I am!
